What is Matcha

Matcha is a type of Japanese premium green tea that is ground into powdered form. Unlike other forms of tea which are steeped in hot water and then discarded, matcha powder is whisked directly into the drink to form a delicious frothy and smooth beverage.

Matcha Grades

Matcha is predominantly sold in two different grades

Ceremonial grade matcha is the highest quality matcha available and is ground from first-harvest leaves. Ceremonial grade is the smoothest type of matcha and is best enjoyed as a traditional tea (whisked with only hot water). This kind of matcha is renowned for its vibrant green color and a smooth delicate flavor.

Culinary grade matcha is known for its more robust flavor which makes it ideal for use in food and beverage recipes. Culinary grade matcha is typically second-harvest leaves which are slightly less vibrant but still a colorful addition to smoothies, lattes, and baked goods.

How is Matcha Made

Tea plants are shade for a few weeks prior to harvest to boost nutrients and develop their signature green color

During the spring and summer leaves are harvested and graded

Leaves are steamed and dried to preserve flavor and color

Leaves are de-stemmed and de-veined to further refine the matcha flavor

Leaves are then expertly stone-ground into a fine powder

Finished matcha is then packaged to maintain peak freshness and sold
